Peter Deckers was born in the Netherlands and trained at the Vakschool Schoonhoven in 1979. He immigrated to New Zealand in 1985 and completed a masters degree at The University of Auckland's Elam School of Fine Arts in 2003.
Peter was the coordinator at Te Auaha Jewellery, Whitireia for 30 years from 1989 till its closure in 2020. A powerhouse of passion and commitment to contemporary jewellery education, Peter also founded Handshake an international mentor and exhibition programme for emerging New Zealand makers (2011–present), a unique project that has launched the careers of many local contemporary jewellers.
Ideas that make distinctive conceptual connections with jewellery are the inspiration for his own practice, which includes his making processes and is often expressed as installation work.
"He looks for what he calls the 'surprising complexity' of things and then seeks to work his way into that complexity beneath a surface which at first can seem a kind of commonness, a sort of normality, neutrality or simplicity. I am investigating the different identities of value by questioning their truth and trust. My works reveal, question, help along, and speculate on how value is formed within the way materials were made, named, used, and promoted, whether man-made or natural.

Discovered prospects
These are revealed ventures from the edge of what is seen and what is not. The stones in this work have been carved until hidden from their surfaces qualities of natural beauty were exposed, the so-called delimit zone of prospecting - the exclusion zone of what is, and what is not.
Reflective light plays a big part in revealing those inner structures and colours that announced themselves.
